Swing Dance Long Island first swing dance of the new year will be our popular Black Tie dance at the Brush Barn in Smithtown, on Saturday, January 5th, 2008.

Gentleman are invited to attend attired in tuxedos and ladies may want to choose an appropriate evening gown.  Past years, people have had a lot of fun dressing up for this event. (If your tux is still in the cleaners due to that unfortunate mess you got into on New Year’s Eve, don’t worry all is forgiven and any presentable attire will do.)

Tuesday, Jan 8, 2008 • SDLI Tuesday Dances - VENUE CHANGE - Brennan’s Closed - NO DANCE • SDLI

Posted by Tom on 01/11/2008 • Permalink

There will be no SDLI dance on Tuesday, January 8th, 2008. The board is actively looking for a new place to host our weekly dances that would be a good match to the venue and our club. Please check back on our website for further updates and add yourself to our e-mail announcement list. To add yourself to the email, click on the “E-mail” link at the top right hands side of the banner.

We just got word that the Brennan’s Irish Pub in Hauppauge has closed as of January 1, 2008. This the location we have been holding our Swing Dances for the last 2 and half years.

As you may know, Swing Dance Long Island is an independent organization, so even though Brennan’s has closed, Swing Dancing on Tuesday will not disappear, we are just going to find an alternate venue for our Tuesday Dance.

We are currently scrambling to locate a new location for our Tuesday Evening Swing Dance. If you have a possible location with a nice wooden floor, that would be good for a Tuesday Swing Dance. Please let us know.

Please check back for the new location.

Friday, Jan 11, 2008 • Big Bad Voodoo Daddy • IMAC

Posted by Tom on 12/01/2007 • Permalink

On Friday, January 11th, 2008 at 7pm & 9:30pm, the Inter-Media Art Center (IMAC) in Huntington, Long Island will present a concert with swinging Big Band group Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

Drums pound, feet tap, fingers snap. A sultry voice begins to croon, and suddenly the horns make their entrance. Man, these cats have got rhythm, and now the vintage-clad crowd is boogying with unharnessed glee. Welcome to the swing scene, where the music, dance, and style of the 1940’s have been revived with a passion. Welcome to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy!

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy had led the international revival of the jump of the Big Band era, with a sound that is not just big and bad, but huge and awesome! In the rich traditions of musical masters Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has jumped into the spotlight of the swing dance craze with a brassy, updated and upbeat style of jazz.

Their credits include performing as the halftime entertainment at the Super Bowl, Orange Bowl, The White House, Billboard Music Awards and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. The group’s videos are routinely featured on MTV and VH1. The band’s biggest break came when they were cast to be the musical focal point of the movie “Swingers”. With a truly contagious sound, rhythm and lyrics that bring passion back into music, Big Band Voodoo Daddy will feed your soul.

Tickets for this performance are $45.00 ($34.00 for IMAC Members). For tickets or further information on this performance, or on other IMAC programs, call IMAC’s 24-hour Arts-Line at (631) 549-ARTS. Tickets can also be purchased at the theater from noon to 6PM, Tuesday through Friday, and after 2PM on the day of the performances or online at http://www.imactheater.org. For further information, call IMAC’s business office at (631) 549-9666.

Venue: Intermedia Arts Center Theater

Intermedia Arts Center Theater

370 New York Avenue, Huntington, NY

http://www.imactheater.org/

Take the Long Island Expressway to exit 49N or the Northern State Parkway to exit 40N. The exit sign will say Huntington Route 110. After a few miles you will cross Jericho Turnpike. Route 110 will change its name to New York Avenue (but will remain Rte 110). After a couple of more miles, you’ll pass the Huntington train station on your right. About a mile past the train station at 370 New York Avenue, between Carver and Elm Street, still on Route 110 and right in the middle of the block, you’ll see a big old theater building with a flat marquee up against the building. That’s IMAC. We suggest you drive past IMAC to our north corner, Elm Street. Make a right up Elm and you’ll find a large free municipal parking lot. Park and walk back to New York Avenue to enter the theater.

By Train

If you’re traveling by train, take the Long Island Railroad to Huntington (the last stop on the Huntington line). Take a taxi to IMAC, 370 New York Avenue. Taxis and trains run all night. For more information you can call IMAC business office Tuesday through Friday 11 am to 6 pm and Saturdays of performances after 2 pm at (631) 549-9666 or e-mail at
