Friday, Aug 1, 2008 • TGIF @ BROOKHAVEN - American Bolero • BNL

Posted by Tom on 07/30/2008 • Permalink

If you don’t feel like dancing after the picture taking, you can always go to a rock concert at the South Room: “Argent Fantasy”, a Long Island-based rock band, will perform in concert on Friday, August 1, at 7 p.m. in the Brookhaven Center; the event is sponsored by the BNL Music Club; Tickets are $10 at the BERA Store or at the door.

ABOUT OUR TGIF:

This Friday, Aug 1st, I will be teaching American Bolero. As usual, we will start from the beginners level and then gradually progress towards int/adv figures.

TGIF @ BROOKHAVEN on Friday, Aug 1st, 2008: Place: Brookhaven Center, Brookhaven National Lab;

Schedule:
** Cold Food Buffet dinner: 7 - 7:45 pm; warmup dancing!
“American Bolero” dance lesson, 7:45 pm to 9:15 pm;
General dancing up to 11:30 pm;

Admission: $15; Cost covers cold hero dinner buffet, cookies, refreshments, etc.

II. ABOUT THE TGIFS @ BROOKHAVEN

Our workshops at Brookhaven Lab are generally designed for “social dancing”. We usually start with a review of the basic moves, then progress towards more advanced patterns that might be useful in any dance social.

There is no fixed partnering as we rotate partners - not only to provide an opportunity for everyone to meet and become social friends, but also to give each and everyone a chance to learn how to apply the basic techniques of “lead and follow”. We don’t offer any individual private instruction. All of our instructors, however, conduct their own private, or group instructions elsewhere outside the Lab. Please feel free to make an arrangement with any of them if you want to get more specialized dance instructions outside Brookhaven Lab.

Construction is now underway to convert our old dance venue Brennan’s Irish Pub to Chase branch.

Before closing at the end of 2007, Brennan’s was at that location for about 7 years.

Prior to Brennan’s, that location was home to the popular nightclub Heffron’s, which had a long run of what must have been about 15 years.

Before Heffron’s, it was the Hauppauge Theater, which showed movies on it’s single-screen. Many locals remember seeing the Rocky Horror Picture Show there in the ‘70s.

Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks—20s & 30s Dance—In 30 years as a bandleader, Vince Giordano has become the authority on recreating the sounds of 1920s and ‘30s jazz and popular music. “I just love the energy of the early jazz,” says Giordano. “I wanted to recapture some of that.” Early appearances with Leon Redbone and on Prairie Home Companion and lending his talents to Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Cotton Club, led to working with Dick Hyman’s Orchestra in half a dozen Woody Allen soundtracks then as a bass player in Sean Penn’s band in Woody’s Sweet and Lowdown. He and band were featured in Gus Van Sant’s film Finding Forrester, in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, Robert DeNiro’s film, The Good Shepherd and most recently in Sam Mendes’ upcoming film: Revolutionary Road. Also a big-band historian and collector, Giordano has more than 30,000 scores in his collection. Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks are renowned on the New York scene for their commitment to preserving and authentically presenting 1920s jazz and popular music.

Band: Ray Abrams Big Swing Band

image

This highly professional swing band, which actually started in the 50’s, under the vision of Hank Dougherty, was acquired by Brooklyn’s famous jazz saxophonist and prolific arranger, Ray Abrams. Ray passed on in 1997, but the band continues to entertain lovers of swing and classic-jazz. The 17 members of the band consistently recreate the unforgettable hard swinging, finger-snapping, toe-tapping sounds of the greatest swing-bands of the 40’s and 50’s. Our musical arrangements feature many of the band’s exceptional soloist, as well as swinging vocals and a fine selection of love ballads, uniquely sung by our featured vocalist, Tulivu-Donna Cumberbatch.

image

The band’s library of musical arrangements, is lengthy and well rounded, ranging from the still modern sounding charts created by founder, Ray Abrams, to the swinging big-band charts from the minds of arrangers like Sam Nestico, Quincy Jones, Sy Oliver, Neal Hefti, and so many others. This valued musical library supports the bands ability to create a well-rounded program of classic-jazz as played by the bands of Basie, Ellington, Hawkins, Foster, Hampton, etc.

The band’s unique ability to perform to the spirit of the music and to swing at the drop of a hat, is consistently nourished by the very dedicated skills of the band’s leader, Ervin Simpson, who has led the band since 1998. No doubt, this ability to swing the most beloved songs from The Classic American Jazz Songbook, explains why the band continues to maintain a growing presence on LI and in the tri-state area.
