Saturday, Sep 13, 2014 • Rockabilly Hot Rod Blastoff • Not a SDLI Event

This is a rockabilly event held at the Moose Lodge in Greenlawn. It will have hot rods outside, rockabilly/jive/swing/lindy dancing inside, a dance contest (open to all levels!) with trophies for 1st/2nd and 3rd place, six live bands, and a pinup contest! Car show runs from 4pm to 6pm and 6pm to whenever for the rest of the activities. It is a very good time. Most people dress retro. I will too. Lots of dancing. And I will take requests as the DJ. Big cash bar and food available. $20 tix. You might get a discount if you are an SDLI member. This is a great opportunity to practice the Lindy moves that James has taught some of us. It is also a good opportunity to practice with different partners. I plan on playing a large share of rockabilly and rhythym and blues and of course some lindy staples with a few surprises thrown in. I look forward to seeing you there.

St. Jean Baptiste Church has a beautiful floor, is right by the #6 subway at Lexington Avenue and 77th Street. Beer and wine are available. Doors open at 7 pm. Unless otherwise noted, a lesson will be offered from 7-8 pm. The band plays from 8-12. General Admission is $18; Students (with photo ID) and Seniors - $14. There is a place to hang your coats, but there is no formal coat check at this time. The New York Swing Dance Society (NYSDS) is a not-for-profit arts organization, in its 26th year, dedicated to the revival and promotion of Swing Dance to live and recorded Big Band music. The NYSDS is organized under the New York Foundation for the Arts.

New Vintage Swing Band - Much like fine champagne, The New Vintage Orchestra bubbles with an unparalleled energy and charisma that is sure to keep dancers going all night. Formed by trumpeter Brian Lewis in August of 1992, the band puts forth an incredibly diverse range of musical talent.

Featured is female vocalist Doris Anne Lewis, singing the hits of Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, Dianne Schure, and many other swing singers.

The bands “Frank Sinatra” crooner is Ron D’Abruzzo who adds his own special blend to the great American standards.

The swing scene’s resurgence in the late 90’s was undeniable. The New Vintage Orchestra reproduces 1930’s and 40’s sounds using original arrangements from Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Harry James, and with special arrangements written by Brian Lewis, the band belts out the sounds of popular dance chart-toppers. Not all of New Vintage’s charts are vintage, however! They also play the hits of Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

The band has backed up such names as The Temptations, Jerry Vale, Connie Francis, Al Martino , Frankie Valli, Bob Newhart and Joan Rivers. Few bands possess the ability to set a room in motion like The New Vintage Orchestra. From the opening downbeat to the last note, screaming brass, gritty saxes, and a strong rhythm section keep the audience jumping the whole night long.

“Standards Aged to Perfection”, The New Vintage Orchestra’s debut CD release, captures the incredible versatility of the group. The album’s eleven tracks include a wide range of classics from the 1930’s and 40’s. From a foot stomping rendition of Benny Goodman’s “Sing Sing Sing” to the silky smooth lyrical lines of Doris Anne Lewis in “And the Angels Sing”, to a rousing, jazzy finale of “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In”, the band is sure to entertain, and, like that bottle of bubbly, only gets better with time.

Mardi Gras’ slogan is “Let the good times roll,” which is translated literally into French as Laissez les bons temps rouler.

We will have beads for all and decorations celebrating our own little “le carnaval” on Long Island. A Cajun dance lesson will be taught this evening.

Tommy James and his All Stars will be performing.

Need vintage clothes for the big USO dance?  You can browse and shop while your dance this evening.

A beginner East Coast lesson will be given at 7:30PM to get you on the floor. A few ballroom dances will be in the mix as well.
